Gram and Dun- Kansas City

As you will see in my post about a girls trip to Kansas City, our favorite meal of the trip was at a restaurant called Gram & Dun.  Gram and Dun is owned by Bread and Butter Concepts, a Kansas City Restaurant group, which runs other fabulous restaurants in Kansas City including Urban Table.  We quickly learned that if you can’t decide where to eat, a Bread and Butter Restaurant is the way to go!

Gram & Dun is right in Country Club plaza and has a great outdoor patio and a very cool vibe inside.

The chandeliers and white washed brick made for a chic, fun atmosphere.

We sat at the bar while we waited for a table.  The drink menu had a ton of options.  There were plenty of beers on tap, a great wine list, and a cocktail menu with some fun variations on classics.  (Cocktails in KC are also very reasonably priced).

The drink menus matched the vibe of the restaurant.

The Mule Variation was delicious!

It only took about 45 minutes to get our table.  We opted to sit inside because outside it was quite humid.  On a nicer night the outdoor patio would have been a no-brainer.  The dinner menu had something for everyone, and just about everything looked good. Deciding on dinner was the toughest decision of our weekend!G&D_Dinner_Menu

We opted to split the french onion dumplings to start.  They were so delicious that we ate them before we could get a picture.  The dumplings were like a deconstructed french onion soup.  Each toothpick was topped with a crouton that you dipped into the broth the dumplings were served in.  After having these, we knew what was coming was going to be good.

We also split The Goat salad.  Goat cheese salads are usually my go-to, but this one stood out.  The edamame was a great addition, and the bread crumbs (which are usually not my favorite) were delicious and moist.  The candied oranges really put the icing on the cake, and we unanimously agreed they were the best part of the salad.

For dinner, Caroline and I both got the Hanger Steak because we were each told that Kansas City has great steak.  This steak did not disappoint.  The meat was tender and cooked to a perfect medium rare (although they could have cooked it more, they suggested medium rare and it was great this way).  The steak was served with potatoes and oyster mushrooms in a hash.  The hash was cooked perfectly, and seasoned well with a fresh basil pesto.  Even Caroline, who did not want mushrooms, ate the hash and loved it! Courtney got the chicken roulade served with kale.  Courtney doesn’t eat red meat, so she is a chicken expert, and said that this was some of the best chicken she has had.  The chicken was cooked in a vacuum with broth, and after cooking the crispy skin was wrapped around it.  The chicken was so tender and juicy! The kale was delicious also.

We also split the creamed brussels sprouts on the side.  No one had seen creamed brussels sprouts before, but they were delicious.  We didn’t get a picture because (again) we ate them too quickly, but the brussels sprouts were shaved and served with cubes of crispy pancetta.  The pancetta added a great flavor dimension to the dish (and of course brussels sprouts and bacon are like peanut butter and jelly).

We loved this delicious meal so much.  I will definitely be recommending Gram & Dun to anyone I know traveling to Kansas City.
